More than 140 years after construction first began, Barcelona's Sagrada Família has reached a milestone few buildings can claim: The Sagrada Família is, finally, the tallest church in the world.
Although it seems that skyscrapers compete with each other to see who can touch the sky more closely, one should never underestimate the reach of religious temples. Churches and cathedrals, with their league of towers and pinnacles, have been vying for the firmament's favor for centuries. The Sagrada Família in Barcelona, therefore, could not be less. A few months before its symbolic completion – scheduled for June 10, 2026, coinciding with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death and with the presence of Pope Leo XIV – the Barcelona basilica has become the tallest church in the world thanks to the tower of Jesus Christ, at 172.5 meters high. It thus surpasses the Ulmer Münster, until now the tallest religious building on the planet.
Tallest church in world has the height measured to the millimeter (and with intention)
Among the many decisions Gaudí made regarding the construction of the Sagrada Família, the main one concerned its height. In fact, the maximum representative of Catalan modernism requested that his great work should not exceed the height of the mountain of Montjuïc, 173 meters, considering that a human work should never exceed that of a creation of nature, which he defined as “God's work”.
Fortunately for Gaudí, the Sagrada Família will not exceed that figure, but it is already the tallest church in the world. The key is in the tower of Jesus Christ, the tallest of the six central towers of the temple. On February 20, 2026, the placement of the upper arm of the cross that crowns it was completed, a key moment that marks the end of its exterior structure. As the basilica itself points out, work will continue on the interior over the next few years.
One of the most innovative aspects of this tower is its construction system: the panels, made of tessellated stone – a technique that combines stone and steel – were fabricated outside the church and then assembled in levels, thus speeding up the whole process. The tower is topped with a three-dimensional four-armed cross, clad in glass and white glazed ceramic. Manufactured in Germany during 2025 and completed with parts produced in workshops in Catalonia, this structure becomes the new visible icon of the Barcelona skyline. “The completion of the Jesus Christ tower cross represents much more than the culmination of a construction phase: it is the result of years of work and study of the legacy Antoni Gaudí left us. It is also a firm commitment to the future, to continue working on the completion of the Sagrada Familia,” says the architect director, Mr. Jordi Faulí.
In turn, it has on its supporting pinnacle the inscription Tu solus Sanctus, Tu solus Dominus, Tu solus Altissimus, translated from Latin as ‘You are the only Holy One, you are the only Lord, you are the only Most High’, a reference to Jesus Christ who, together with the Virgin Mary, baptize the two tallest towers of the Sagrada Familia. To get an idea, the monument actually has 18 towers: 12 dedicated to the apostles (four on each façade) and six central ones, corresponding to the four evangelists, the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, the latter being the tallest of them all. Sometimes, the human work never eclipses nature itself. But almost.
