Stepping inside this unexpectedly modern Cairo mansion might feel like one has walked into a museum, but it is not only a window to contemporary art and design in Egypt; it is also warm and hospitable. “We have a saying in Egypt which translates roughly as ‘the best doesn’t exist when it comes to your own home’ and this is particularly true for designers,” says Aynour Soufrakis with a laugh. “You will never have enough time, so I built my home gradually.” She is a co-founder at family-run design and architecture practice DB Architects, which has become known for its impressive projects. “When I first stepped into what would become by eventual home, I saw endless possibilities,” recalls Egyprian architect Fathy Ibrahim. “The lack of finishing meant I could design freely, without having to be controlled by existing layouts or styles.” This blank canvas offered Ibrahim, an architect accustomed to bringing others’ visions to life, the rare opportunity to explore his own design vocabulary without compromise.

A Modernised Midcentury Apartment in Cairo
Developed in the early 1900s, Maadi is one of Cairo’s older neighbourhoods, desirable not only for its heritage and fine architecture, but also for its leafiness and proximity to the city centre. All of these qualities lured the family that owns this four-bedroom rooftop apartment. The owners of this apartment in Cairo – Islam, a financial adviser, Farida, an arts and culture researcher and producer, and Leyla, their three-year-old daughter – wanted an open, light-filled, well-connected space with plenty of room to host gatherings. “The couple requested spaces that could easily adapt to different usages as their family grows,” says architect Alia Mortada, founder of Cairo studio Buro Doqi, who was enlisted to update the space. Islam also had another, more unusual priority. His background is in mathematics, and he wanted Penrose tiling – sequences of intersecting curved and rhomboid shapes, named after mathematician Roger Penrose – to be an integral part of the interior design. This expansive three-bedroom Cairo villa amply demonstrates the design philosophy of its architect, Emy Hussein, who is driven by the desire to provoke emotional responses to a space. “The concept revolved around the delicate balance between two contrasting emotions: a sense of awe and a feeling of gentle comfort,” she explains. “These dual forces served as the core drivers behind the design, infusing the space with both intensity and warmth.” The home is the principal residence in a family compound consisting of four adjacent villas. Hussein was initially brought on board to open up the landscaped garden of the site, creating a large, unified garden for the family. Historic Cairo Apartments Transformed Into Art- and Design-Filled Rentals
For a brief spell at the start of the 1940s, the Immobilia Building was not only Cairo’s tallest building, but also the tallest building in the Middle East. The city’s first skyscraper, designed by French architects Max Edrei and Gaston Rossi, was an arresting Art Deco addition to an area that was, at the time, sedate – unrecognisable from the chaos of the modern capital. An Artfully Layered Cairo Villa That Blends the Past With the Present

Set on a generous 3,1000 square-metre plot, the house is located in a compound featuring an assortment of villa prototypes; some smart thinking has resulted in a layered feel to the architecture, with an eclectic blend of materials and silhouettes. Take, for example, the concrete cladding reminiscent of woven baskets (“or animal skin”, as Soufrakis points out). The initial design featured an “interesting marble cladding”, but an impromptu trip with the client to Italy put these sharp concrete blocks on their radar, which, when twisted at a 90 or 100-degree angle, form dynamic shapes. “It not only gave us an interesting aesthetic for the finish of the house, but it also added to the U-value [heat transfer] and insulation value,” adds Soufrakis. “It was very complicated to do because we had to rework the elevations and the openings to make the concrete blocks level with all the windows, so we had to refortify the house.
